What Are Air Ducts?

Air ducts are usually hidden from view in homes and offices. They are normally insulated tubes or channels that go behind floors, walls and ceilings to supply you with re-conditioned air (heated, cooled, dehumidified or humidified air).

The ducts typically go to an air handling unit (AHU) that reconditions the air. In homes, these AHUs are found in crawl spaces, attics, garages or inside the home. At businesses, they are usually outside, on the roof, or inside at some designated area of the building.

Air handling systems pull air in through a vent called a “return.” In homes, this is where you where you can change filters. There are often one-three in most homes. After this air is reconditioned through the AHU, it is pushed with a blower through the supply side of the system. Air ducts take this air and distribute it into homes or offices through diffusers called “supplies.” These can be on the floors, walls, or ceilings.

Sometimes, an air handling system is set up to take in fresh air from outside.

Why Clean Air Ducts?

In effect, air handling systems recycle air in a home over and over again. Particles in the air (like dust, hair, lint, and mold spores) will either come to rest in the air ducts or get caught in the air filters. Some particles will get circulated through the system repeatedly.

Over time, the natural humidity we like in our air handling system (most of the time, it’s between 30-60 percent relative humidity), will cause mold to grow on the organic material in the air duct system. As air passes over this mold growth, more mold spores are dispersed. This can lead to poor indoor air quality.

How Do I Clean Air Ducts?

Call AdvantaClean today at (804) 409-2934!

Leave it to the professionals. Cleaning it up yourself with a shop-vac or hiring unqualified people do the work may lead to more problems.

The industry-recommended way to clean air duct systems is to use a “push and pull” method. In general, the basic steps are to turn off the AHU. You attach a portable power HEPA vacuum to one end of the system to “pull” the air out. You seal the duct covers with a temporary, sticky wrap. Then you go through each duct and “push” the air through it using an air compressor with long hoses that reach into the ducts. Different techniques, access points, and air whip heads are used to dislodge debris in the air ducts down to the power vacuum.
