Dryer Vent Cleaning
Dryer vent cleaning is one of the most important parts of your annual home maintenance and should be performed once a year at minimum. Dryer vent cleaning is also a crucial part of commercial and industrial property maintenance where dryers are used, especially if they are in constant use. Dryer vent cleanings are so critical because of the dangers involved with a clogged dryer vent.
Dryer vent fires occur in 2,900 residential properties each year, as reported by the U.S. Fire Administration. These fires result, on average, in five deaths, 100 injuries and an estimated $35 million in property loss. The number one cause of dryer vent fires is a failure to clean the dryer.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that there are 3,700 hotel and motel fires annually. Roughly 10% of those fires are clothes dryer and washer related, half of which started in the lint trap. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, commercial dryer vent fires are 78% more likely to result in injury than residential properties.
did you know dryer vent cleaning reduces your risk of having a house fire?
Dyer vent fires occur when a build-up of lint or some other foreign material is blocking the vent, preventing it from releasing the hot, moist air inside the dryer. Dryers work by moving hot air through a turning drum that tumbles your clothing dry. Any fibers or pieces of debris left on your clothes form into pieces of lint as the dryer moves. The lint pieces should be trapped by the lint filter, but some of the lint escapes and moves into the vent when the dryer pushes out the moist air from your clothes. Inside of the dryer vent, the lint begins to accumulate and given time, it will clog the dryer vent completely. When the dryer vent is clogged, the moist air can no longer be vented properly, and the dryer begins to work harder to dry your clothes. When it has gotten to this point, the heat build-up ignites the lint in the vent, resulting in a fire.
