Dryer Vent Cleaning
Dryer vent cleaning is one of the most important steps to your annual home maintenance. Scheduling a dryer vent cleaning once a year helps protect your home from harm because a clogged dryer vent is a dangerous dryer vent. Dryer vent cleaning is also necessary for commercial and industrial properties to perform regularly, especially if their dryers are used continuously.
Clogged dryer vents lead to dryer vent fires, which occur in 2,900 residential properties each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. On average, these fires result in five deaths, 100 injuries and upwards of $35 million in property losses. The number one cause of dryer vent fires is a failure to clean the dryer.
In commercial properties, the National Fire Protection Association found that there are 3,700 hotel and motel fires annually. 10% of these are washer and dryer related, most of which started in the lint trap. Commercial dryer vent fires are 78% more likely to result in injury than residential properties, as reported by the U.S. Fire Administration.
clogged dryer vents can cause house fires
When lint or other foreign material clogs your dryer vent, you are at risk for a dryer vent fire. Dryers work by tumbling your clothes inside a turning drum that pushes warm air through them. When the dryer vent is clogged, the moist air from the clothes is unable to escape and becomes a hazard. Any fibers or debris left on your clothes form into lint, and ideally, the lint particles are trapped by the lint trap. When they are not, they move into the dryer vent as it vents moist air, and over time the lint clogs the dryer vent. When it begins to clog, the dryer starts to work harder and harder to dry your clothes and may take several cycles to achieve desired results. When it's clogged, the moist air can no longer vent to the outside, and the resulting heat build-up ignites the lint in the vent causing a fire.
