Staggering Statistics...Dryer Vent DataJanuary 28, 2013 0 Comments
Very few of us have “Get the dryer vent cleaned” at the top of our to-do list. However, According to a recent FEMA study, 28% of residential clothes dryer fires were caused by dust, fiber and lint. Every year, there are an estimated 2,900 clothes dryer fires causing an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35million in property loss. Staggering statistics, aren’t they?
What causes these fires? Lint accumulation and reduced airflow feed on each other to create prime conditions for a fire. Additionally, new homes are being constructed with laundry rooms located away from an outside wall in areas such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and hall closets. Consequently, dryers are being vented longer distances, and are being installed with sharp turns and bends to accommodate the structure of the home. As a result, dryer vents are harder to reach and the twisted duct configurations create more places for lint to gather.
