  • Consider upgrading the traditional light bulbs in your home.
According to Energy Saver, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) consumer resource on saving energy and using renewable energy technologies at home, by switching to brighter, safer, and more eco-friendly ENERGY STAR® qualified LED light bulbs, you’ll wind up using 70% less energy than with traditional bulbs.
  • Turn off your computers and monitors when not in use. You can also plug your home electronics (TVs, DVD players) into power strips that you can easily turn off when the equipment is not in use.
  • Save money, Stay warm: Lower your water heater thermostat to 120 degrees.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
  • Save money, Stay warm: Identify air leaks in your home and seal them. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, unless your home was specifically built for energy efficiency, you can most likely reduce your energy bills by adding more insulation. Many older homes have less insulation than homes built today, but adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within just a few years. Insulation inhibits heat flow through the building envelope of your home, ultimately saving money, improving comfort, and even helping to prevent water damage caused by frozen pipes.
