Nearly everyone knows that October is the internationally-recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month… but did you know that it’s also Fire Prevention Month?

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 fire that killed 250 and left 100,000 homeless established a precedent for fire prevention awareness that’s been observed every October since 1922.

In honor of Fire Prevention Month, take a few minutes to remind yourself of these simple ways to prevent fires in your home:

  • Install smoke detectors on every level of your home and test them monthly.
  • Practice electrical safety by not overloading outlets or extension cords, and unplugging appliances when not in use.
  • Keep portable heating units at least three feet away from anything that can catch fire.
  • Check all holiday lights for frayed or exposed wires and discard. Keep lights away from wrapping paper, curtains, decorations or other items that can ignite.
  • Have your dryer vent cleaned at least once a year. (Your venting system should be cleaned out from the inside of the dryer to the outside vent cap by a professional dryer vent cleaning company.)

To help avoid a house fire, if you suspect that your dryer vent is clogged, call AdvantaClean today!
