Mold or Mildew?September 25, 2012 0 Comments
What is mold?
Mold or mildew is a fungus that grows on plants and fibers and is most often associated with damp, musty locations. Mold travels through the air as tiny spores which like to make their home in dark, wet areas and multiply.
It’s an allergen and irritant, which makes it likely to pose health problems. Some people are particularly sensitive to mold, and exposure can cause you to have symptoms like eye irritation, stuffiness, and mold can worsen the symptoms of asthma and allergies.
How do you know if you have mold or mildew?
Did you know that the terms mold and mildew actually refer to the same thing? Both words refer to a colony of fungus that grows in damp, dark areas. Most people use the phrase “clean mildew” when referring to the types of mold typically found in bathrooms, especially on shower walls.
Mold and mildew both grow on wood products, ceiling tiles, cardboard, wallpaper, carpets, drywall, fabric, plants, foods, insulation, decaying leaves, and other organic material.
