Avoiding Costly Homeowners Insurance Claims this Winter

According to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.), winter-related homeowners insurance claims have more than doubled within the last 20 years, averaging a total of $26,977 per household. Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) president and CEO Julie Rochman says, “Proper maintenance and care is critical to avoiding significant property damage due to severe winter weather.”

To help prevent costly wintertime home repairs, the I.I.I. and IBHS identify the most common culprits:

  • Costly Homeowners Insurance Claims: Frozen pipes. When the outside temperature drops below 20 degrees (Fahrenheit), water pipes in homes with little or no insulation are likely to freeze and break. In fact, a one-eight-inch crack in a pipe can spew out more than 250 gallons of water per day, destroying floors, furniture, appliances, and personal items. To prevent damage related to frozen pipes, be sure to:

  • Costly Homeowners Insurance Claims: Hail damage. You can’t prevent hail storms, but you can be prepared for them. Inspect your roof every fall and repair or replace missing tiles. Also understand your homeowner’s insurance coverage and any hail and wind exclusions that may apply.
  • Costly Homeowners Insurance Claims: Wind damage. Most common in the Midwest, the best way to prepare for winter wind storms includes removing anything outside that isn’t nailed down; inspecting your home’s exterior for anything loose; and trimming the trees around your house.
  • Costly Homeowners Insurance Claims: Snow and ice. Melting snow can inflict significant damage to property – and winter storms are the third-largest cause of catastrophe losses, accounting for 7.4% of catastrophe losses nationwide from 1991 to 2010 (equaling $1.3 billion annually). The average water damage and freezing claim was $6,347 from 2005 to 2009, with such claims accounting for the second-most frequent cause of loss after wind and hail.
