For Dryer Fire Safety, Get the Lint Out!

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports that an estimated 2,900 residential dryer fires occurred between 2008-2012, and that those dryer fires contributed to five deaths and $35 million in property loss. How can you help prevent your home from being a dryer fire casualty? Get the lint out!

What Causes Dryer Fires?

FEMA explains that a clothes dryer works by forcing hot air through a turning drum, and wet clothes placed in the drum are then dried by moving hot air. Lint is created from the clothes as they tumble in the drum; and while a lot of the lint is trapped by the dryer’s lint trap, some lint is also carried through the vent system along with the moist, hot air. Because lint is a highly combustible material that builds up in both the dryer and the dryer vent, reducing the dryer’s airflow, it makes the perfect kindling for a dryer fire.

How to Prevent Dryer Fires

To help keep your family safe from a dryer fires, and to practice fire safety, clean the lint screen before or after drying each load of clothes. According to FEMA, failure to clean the dust, fiber, and lint from dryers is the leading contributing factor to the ignition of dryer fires.

You should also consider scheduling a dryer vent cleaning with a professional once every year to keep your dryer exhaust vent clean and unblocked; keep the area around your dryer clean and free of clutter; and make sure to not leave dried clothes in the dryer.

Additional Ways to Practice Fire Safety this Summer

The Fourth of July is just around the corner and you know what that means – sparklers and fire crackers and bottle rockets, oh my! As reported by Care2, an estimated 9,140 people are injured by
fireworks every year, resulting in the death of nearly seven people – all due to a lack of fireworks safety. If you decide to use fireworks this July 4th, follow these safety tips to help prevent injuries:

  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Never throw fireworks at people.
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a safe, non-wooded area.
  • Have a bucket of water handy.
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
