Tips for Avoiding Breathing Difficulties
According to Norman Edelman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of the American Lung Association (ALA), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth-leading cause of death in the U.S. after heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Fortunately, with the right combination of air quality and health initiatives, there are some measures you can take to keep your lungs strong and healthy, avoiding symptoms like breathing difficulties, cramps, vomiting, confusion, and dizziness.
The ALA recommends taking the following measures to avoid breathing difficulties:
- Don’t smoke anything. Smoking increases your risk of lung cancer and COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
- Exercise more. Dr. Edelman explains that while exercise in itself won’t make your lungs stronger, it will help you get more out of them. The better your cardiorespiratory fitness, the easier it is for your lungs to keep your heart and muscles supplied with oxygen.
- Improve indoor air. While it may be difficult, if not impossible, to avoid running into asthma triggers in the outside world, it doesn’t have to be difficult at home or at work. At home, you can set your central air conditioning to “recirculate,” which will keep many of your outdoor asthma triggers from entering your home. Scheduling an air duct cleaning to remove the pollen and mold spores that are trapped in your ductwork is a great idea to help avoid breathing difficulties because otherwise, you’re recirculating all of those allergy triggers.
- Eat right. A 2010 study found that people who consumed the most antioxidant-rich, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, etc.) had almost half the risk of lung cancer compared to those who consumed the least.
- Check for radon. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in the ground. It typically leaks into a house through cracks in the foundation and walls. Get your home tested, and if radon levels are between 2 and 4 pCi/L, consider radon reduction.
Most importantly, when it comes to avoiding breathing difficulties, know the warning signs. If you have a cough for more than a month, or if you have a difficult time breathing with little or no physical exertion, see a doctor. Wheezing, coughing up blood, and chest pains lasting longer than a month are all also problematic, so get it checked out.
